The Patronal Festival for St Augustine is celebrated on May 26. In the sixth century St Augustine and his monks, reluctantly arrived in Kent in England to convert the people there to Christianity.
They came at the invitation of Ethelbert, the King of Kent, whose wife Bertha who was already a Christian, and the monks were commanded by Pope Gregory the Great to do so.
On a hill overlooking the city of Canterbury stands a beautiful little church dedicated to St Martin of Tours. The Romano-British tiles can still be seen jutting from the ancient stonework. This was the first spiritual home of Augustine and his monks.
St Augustine died circa 605.
